DHA to EPA ratio
How your two long-chain omega-3s sit relative to each other.

What this marker is
EPA and DHA are both omega-3s and they do different jobs. DHA is structural and concentrates in brain and retinal membranes. EPA is largely a signalling substrate, feeding the mediators that resolve an inflammatory response.
This ratio shows which of the two your supply favours. Two people with an identical Omega-3 Index can sit at opposite ends of it, and that difference changes which supplement form is worth taking.
On this panel the in-range band runs from 4 to 30, with 7 to 23 treated as optimal.
Read it as a companion to the Omega-3 Index rather than a replacement. The index tells you whether you have enough omega-3 in total; this tells you what that total is made of. Both can be in range, and both can be out, independently of each other.
If your result is low
Below 4 means EPA is high relative to DHA. The usual cause is an EPA-dominant supplement taken for mood or inflammatory support without a matching DHA source.
Since DHA is the structural omega-3, a persistently low ratio is worth correcting even when total omega-3 looks adequate.
Switching to a DHA-rich formulation, or adding algal DHA alongside the existing product, moves it without raising total intake much.
If your result is in range
Between 7 and 23 the balance sits in the optimal band, and 4 to 30 still reads as in range.
Whole fish tends to land people here without any deliberate management, because it supplies both. Ratio problems are mostly a supplement phenomenon.
If your result is high
Above 30 means DHA dominates. Cod liver oil and high-DHA formulations both push in this direction, and so does algal DHA taken alone.
The consideration is that the EPA-dependent side of omega-3 signalling has less substrate to work with, which is the side associated with inflammatory resolution and mood.
An EPA-dominant product, or a combination with the EPA and DHA amounts printed separately, brings it back. Note that cod liver oil also carries vitamin A, so check that result before raising the dose further.
Why the Western lifestyle moves it
The Western contribution here is indirect. Low fish intake means most people meet their omega-3 requirement through a supplement, and a supplement has a fixed ratio in a way that food does not.
The result is that the balance becomes a purchasing decision rather than something diet averages out, and it is rarely a decision anyone makes deliberately.
What to eat
Vary the fish. Salmon and mackerel lean toward DHA, while sardines and anchovies carry proportionally more EPA.
Eating both across a week gives the natural ratio diversity that a single supplement cannot.
Shellfish and roe contribute smaller amounts of both.
Supplement forms and doses
Choose a product with EPA and DHA amounts listed separately rather than a combined omega-3 figure, which is what makes the ratio controllable at all.
If DHA-heavy, move to an EPA-dominant formula at roughly 2:1 or 3:1 EPA to DHA. If EPA-heavy, add a high-DHA or algal DHA product.
Retest after three to four months. Membrane composition changes slowly, so an earlier retest mostly measures the last few meals.
