What this marker is

Copper is a trace mineral required by a small number of enzymes that do disproportionately important work. Ceruloplasmin, which carries most of the copper in your blood, is also the enzyme that loads iron onto transferrin for transport. Without enough copper, iron cannot move properly even when iron stores are adequate.

It is also needed by lysyl oxidase, which cross-links collagen and elastin and therefore determines the strength of connective tissue and blood vessel walls, and by the copper-zinc form of superoxide dismutase, one of the body's main antioxidant enzymes.

Copper and zinc compete for the same intestinal transporter, so neither result means much without the other. The copper to zinc ratio is often the more informative number.

If your result is low

Below 10 umol/L indicates low circulating copper. The effect that surprises people is anaemia that does not respond to iron, because copper is what allows stored iron to be mobilised and used.

Neurological effects can follow prolonged insufficiency, since copper is involved in myelin maintenance and in the synthesis of noradrenaline from dopamine.

The most common cause in practice is long-running high-dose zinc supplementation, which induces a gut protein that traps copper and blocks its absorption. Malabsorption conditions and prior gastric surgery are others.

If your result is in range

Between 10 and 22 umol/L your serum copper sits inside the reference range for this panel.

Read it alongside zinc rather than alone. Both results can sit inside their own ranges while the ratio between them sits outside its own, which is the situation the ratio marker exists to catch.

Note that copper rises with inflammation and with oestrogen, including from hormonal contraception and pregnancy, so context matters when interpreting a result near the top of the range.

If your result is high

Above 22 umol/L means circulating copper is above the reference range. Because ceruloplasmin is an acute phase reactant, the first thing to consider is whether inflammation or infection is raising it rather than copper intake.

Genuine excess exposure comes from copper plumbing, unfiltered water, copper cookware, copper IUDs and some multivitamins. Occupational exposure is a less common route.

Persistent elevation without an inflammatory explanation is worth reviewing alongside ceruloplasmin and liver function with your practitioner, since the liver handles copper clearance.

Why the Western lifestyle moves it

The Western pattern distorts the copper to zinc balance from both directions. Refined grains and depleted soil lower zinc intake, while copper exposure from plumbing and supplementation stays constant or rises.

Chronic low-grade inflammation raises ceruloplasmin, and therefore measured copper, independently of how much copper you actually consume. The result is a marker that can drift upward without any change in diet.

What to eat

Grass-fed liver in small amounts about once a week is the densest source. Dark chocolate at 85% or above, cashews, sesame seeds and shiitake mushrooms all contribute.

When copper is high relative to zinc, the more useful move is adding zinc-rich foods, which are oysters, beef and pumpkin seeds, rather than removing copper foods.

Reduce copper exposure from unfiltered water and copper cookware if the result is persistently high.

Supplement forms and doses

If copper is low, copper bisglycinate at 1 to 2 mg daily, taken alongside zinc so the ratio does not swing the other way.

If copper is high, raising zinc to around 30 mg daily as bisglycinate is the usual approach, since zinc reduces copper absorption directly.

Molybdenum at 150 to 300 mcg daily takes part in copper clearance. Milk thistle and NAC are often used to support liver function where clearance is the concern. Decide the direction with your practitioner before starting, because the two errors here have opposite fixes.
