What this marker is

Tyrosine is the starting material for two separate systems. One is the catecholamines: dopamine, then noradrenaline, then adrenaline. The other is thyroid hormone, where tyrosine forms the backbone that iodine attaches to.

It is conditionally essential. The body makes it from phenylalanine, so intake matters less than for a strictly essential amino acid, but that conversion has to keep pace with demand.

Demand is the variable that moves. Acute stress consumes catecholamines quickly, and sustained stress can draw tyrosine down faster than diet and conversion replace it, which is the mechanism behind its use during high-demand periods.

If your result is low

Below 45 umol/L indicates low tyrosine. Because both dopamine and thyroid hormone depend on it, the effects reported span motivation and focus on one side and energy and temperature regulation on the other.

Chronic stress is the usual driver, since it raises consumption rather than lowering intake. Low protein intake and impaired phenylalanine conversion are the other routes.

Cofactor availability matters as much as substrate. Dopamine synthesis from tyrosine requires vitamin B6, vitamin C, iron and copper, so a shortfall in any of those limits output regardless of tyrosine supply.

If your result is in range

Between 45 and 180 umol/L your tyrosine sits inside the reference range for this panel.

Read it against your tryptophan result. The balance between the two determines the relative supply to the dopamine and serotonin systems, and that balance is more informative than either number alone.

If your result is high

Above 180 umol/L usually reflects supplementation or a high recent protein intake, since tyrosine is abundant in most protein foods.

A high result is not concerning in itself. Tyrosine supplementation is generally well tolerated, though it can be stimulating, which is why it is taken in the morning rather than the evening.

If you take medication affecting dopamine or thyroid function, or have a thyroid condition, raise a high result with your practitioner rather than adjusting supplementation on your own.

Why the Western lifestyle moves it

Chronic stress is the Western factor that acts most directly on this marker. It depletes tyrosine by raising catecholamine production while doing nothing to increase supply.

The pattern compounds because the same stress load raises cortisol and disturbs sleep, both of which increase the demand for the dopamine system to keep functioning without adequate recovery.

What to eat

Almonds, avocados, bananas, chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, cheese and sesame seeds are all reliable sources.

Include iodine-rich foods such as seaweed, since thyroid hormone needs iodine attached to the tyrosine backbone and tyrosine alone will not cover that side.

Managing the stress load matters more than intake here, because sustained stress depletes tyrosine faster than diet realistically replaces it.

Supplement forms and doses

N-acetyl L-tyrosine at 300 to 500 mg daily, or L-tyrosine at 500 to 2,000 mg on an empty stomach, taken in the morning because it can be stimulating.

The effect is most consistent during acute stress or sleep deprivation rather than as a general daily addition.

Pair with vitamin B6 as P5P at around 25 mg, vitamin C at 500 mg and copper at around 1 mg, which are the cofactors for dopamine synthesis. Ashwagandha and rhodiola are used to reduce the stress-driven depletion rate itself.
