Valine
One of the three branched-chain amino acids, used in muscle repair and nitrogen balance.

What this marker is
Valine is an essential branched-chain amino acid, measured here on its own as well as inside the BCAA total. It is used in muscle metabolism, tissue repair and nitrogen balance.
Of the three branched-chain amino acids it is the least involved in signalling. Leucine is what activates muscle protein synthesis, while valine and isoleucine contribute mainly as building material and as fuel that muscle can oxidise directly.
It also feeds gluconeogenesis, meaning it can be converted to glucose, which is part of why it is drawn down during prolonged exercise and fasting.
Valine competes with tryptophan and tyrosine for the same transporter into the brain. That competition is the reason a large branched-chain amino acid load can reduce how much of those two reaches the brain, which links this marker to the mood and focus amino acids on the same panel.
If your result is low
Below 230 umol/L indicates low valine. As with the other essential amino acids, the direct cause is usually insufficient complete protein.
Because valine is oxidised in muscle during sustained effort, high training volume without matching protein intake draws it down.
A low valine result rarely appears in isolation. It usually accompanies low readings across the other essential amino acids, which points at overall protein adequacy rather than at valine specifically.
If your result is in range
Between 230 and 460 umol/L your valine sits inside the reference range for this panel.
Read it alongside the BCAA total. Valine moving differently from the group is more informative than valine alone, since the three normally track together.
If your result is high
Above 460 umol/L reflects either recent protein or supplement intake, or the same impaired breakdown that raises the BCAA total as a group.
As with the BCAA total, a high result is not automatically favourable. Elevated branched-chain amino acids are associated with insulin resistance, and that association runs through reduced catabolism rather than high intake.
Interpret a high valine result in the context of the whole BCAA picture and your metabolic markers rather than on its own.
Why the Western lifestyle moves it
Low activity reduces the muscle turnover that consumes valine, so the Western pattern lowers utilisation rather than supply.
Poor protein distribution compounds it. Protein concentrated in a single evening meal, which is the common Western pattern, supports muscle protein synthesis less well across the day than the same total spread evenly.
What to eat
Complete proteins at every meal: eggs, poultry, beef, fish, dairy and soy.
Cottage cheese, Greek yoghurt and whey-based foods are particularly rich in valine and the other branched-chain amino acids.
Pair resistance training with 30 to 40 g of protein afterwards, which is where branched-chain amino acid utilisation is highest.
Supplement forms and doses
Essential amino acids at 10 to 15 g daily supply valine in the context of all nine essential amino acids, which is what complete protein synthesis requires.
Whey protein isolate at 20 to 40 g after training is naturally rich in valine and needs no separate supplementation alongside.
Creatine monohydrate at 3 to 5 g daily supports the training performance that creates the demand in the first place.
