What this marker is

The branched-chain amino acids are leucine, isoleucine and valine. They are essential, and they are unusual in being metabolised largely in muscle rather than in the liver, which is why they are so closely associated with muscle tissue.

Leucine does something the other two do not. It activates mTOR, the signal that switches on muscle protein synthesis, which makes it the trigger rather than merely a building block.

This marker sums all three. Reading it well means knowing that the same number can mean opposite things depending on context, which is the point that the next sections turn on.

If your result is low

Below 270 umol/L indicates low circulating BCAAs. The usual cause is simply insufficient protein intake, particularly from complete sources.

Sustained low levels alongside resistance training mean the raw material for adaptation is not there. Training stimulus without substrate produces less than either would suggest.

Illness, injury and any catabolic state raise BCAA consumption in muscle, so demand as well as supply can drive a low result.

If your result is in range

Between 270 and 700 umol/L your BCAAs sit inside the reference range for this panel.

Timing affects this number more than most. A recent protein meal raises it substantially, so a result should be interpreted with the fasting state of the sample in mind.

If your result is high

Above 700 umol/L is the result that most often gets misread, because more is assumed to be better and here it may not be.

Elevated circulating BCAAs are among the more consistent metabolic findings associated with insulin resistance. The interpretation is that impaired BCAA breakdown, rather than high intake, drives the rise, so the amino acids accumulate in circulation.

The practical point is that a high result in someone not consuming large amounts of protein or supplements is worth reading alongside metabolic markers rather than treated as evidence of good protein status. Raise it with your practitioner if other metabolic markers are also moving.

Why the Western lifestyle moves it

Sedentary habits reduce BCAA utilisation, since muscle is where these amino acids are consumed and inactive muscle consumes less.

The combination that matters is a Western pattern of high protein intake alongside low activity and rising insulin resistance, which is the setting in which circulating BCAAs rise while their actual use falls.

What to eat

Complete protein at every meal: eggs, chicken, beef, fish, dairy and whey. Dairy and beef are particularly leucine-rich.

Time protein around physical activity, within roughly two hours either side of resistance training, since that is when utilisation is highest.

Active individuals generally target 1.6 to 2.2 g of protein per kg of bodyweight daily, which covers BCAA requirements without separate supplementation.

Supplement forms and doses

Whey protein isolate at 20 to 40 g after training supplies a leucine-rich BCAA source inside a complete protein, which is the preferable form.

Essential amino acids at 10 to 15 g are better than BCAAs alone, because muscle protein synthesis needs all nine essential amino acids and supplying only three limits what can be built.

Isolated BCAA powder at 5 to 10 g in a 2:1:1 ratio remains an option where whole food is impractical, though it is the least useful of the three. Creatine monohydrate at 3 to 5 g daily supports the training that drives the demand.
