BCAA to tyrosine ratio
Muscle-building amino acids measured against the dopamine precursor.

What this marker is
This ratio compares your branched-chain amino acids against tyrosine. They are not unrelated pools: both are large neutral amino acids, and they compete for the same transporter across the blood-brain barrier.
That competition is the point. A large branched-chain load reduces how much tyrosine reaches the brain, and tyrosine is what dopamine and noradrenaline are built from. So the ratio touches physical performance on one side and focus and drive on the other.
On this panel the in-range band runs from 4.4 to 6.5, with 4.5 to 5.0 treated as optimal. It is a narrow window, which is why it moves with ordinary changes in how you eat.
If your result is low
Below 4.4 means branched-chain amino acids are low relative to tyrosine. The usual driver is protein intake, either too little overall or too little from complete sources.
Illness, injury and any catabolic state raise branched-chain consumption in muscle, so a low result can reflect demand rather than supply.
Read it alongside your BCAA and valine results. If those are low too, the answer is total protein rather than anything about the balance.
If your result is in range
Between 4.5 and 5.0 the balance sits in the optimal band, with 4.4 to 6.5 reading as in range.
Getting here is mostly about protein distribution rather than total. Protein spread across the day, from varied sources, lands in this window more reliably than the same amount eaten in one evening meal.
If your result is high
Above 6.5 means branched-chain amino acids dominate. Heavy BCAA or whey supplementation without balancing tyrosine-rich foods is the common cause.
The consequence worth knowing is the transporter competition: a high ratio means proportionally less tyrosine reaching the brain, which is the substrate for dopamine.
It is also worth reading alongside metabolic markers, since raised circulating branched-chain amino acids are associated with insulin resistance through impaired breakdown rather than high intake.
Why the Western lifestyle moves it
Two Western patterns push this ratio around. Isolated BCAA and whey supplements supply branched-chain amino acids in a concentrated form that food never does, raising one side sharply.
At the same time, protein concentrated into a single large evening meal supports neither side well across the day, which is the pattern most Western eating follows.
What to eat
Diversify protein across the day rather than relying on one source. Animal proteins supply the branched-chain side; almonds, avocados, eggs and cheese carry tyrosine.
A protein-rich breakfast establishes both supplies early, which matters more for this ratio than the day's total.
Avoid leaning heavily on BCAA-dominant protein without anything supplying neurotransmitter precursors alongside.
Supplement forms and doses
Essential amino acids at 10 to 15 g daily give a balanced supply across all nine, which suits this ratio better than isolated branched-chain powder.
If the ratio suggests a tyrosine shortfall, N-acetyl L-tyrosine at 300 to 500 mg in the morning, with vitamin B6 and vitamin C as cofactors.
If it is branched-chain dominant, the first move is reducing isolated BCAA supplementation rather than adding anything.
